New and Used Toyota Information:

Before the Second World War the North American car companies GM, Ford and Chrysler dominated the car sales and production in Japan.

The new Toyota company did not even begin making cars when they were formed in 1926, instead they manufactured weaving machinery. Then in 1933 they started to create a small car company recruiting mostly from General Motors for this purpose.

Their first car was produced in 1935 and was a close body copy of the Chrysler Airflow, and used a 3.4 liter, six-cylinder engine a close copy from Chevrolet.

After the Second World War United States occupying forces restricted Japans’ production but in 1955 Toyota produced a new model called ‘The Crown’. It was their first domestically produced model.

In 1966 they started making the Corolla, which became one of the best selling cars in the world.

During the 1980’s Toyota managed to become the third largest car company only behind General Motors and ford.

There were early 1980’s rumours that Toyota would co-produce cars with Ford however this never happened, with Toyota preferring to team up with General motors instead. This partnership would remain strong, well beyond the 1980’s.
