New and Used Land Rover Information:

The History of Land Rover: 1945, after the war had ended the Rover company were given permission by the government to resume civilian car production. The Government had a lot of power over vehicle manufacturers due to the restrictions on the supply of new steel.

Since there was no market for smaller cars at this time, the pivotal players behind the company used their minds towards creating a car which was simple in design, cheap to build and would use as little sheet steel as possible.

Due to the various constraints the creators needed to innovate. They chose an aluminium alloy for the bodywork – there was a reasonable supply of this (compared to steel) andwas soft, therefore easier to work and tooling requirements were minimized. It was also more resistant to corrosion - an excellent benefit for a vehicle which would spend much of its life in harsh conditions.

Work on a prototype began in 1947 and was finished in the summer of that year and the Land Rover was created. The vehicle bore a resemblance to the Jeep but was not a copy.
