Car Registration began in 1003 when the London County Council issued the plate ‘A1’ to a man named Earl Russell. At this time, similar institutions across the UK where allocated groups of letter and number combinations in order to register vehicles. As the years passed the combinations had to change in order to factor in the increasing numbers of vehicles being registered.
Car registration and number plates are now cherished with many selling for more than the average house price! One of the highest sums paid was in 1993 where £235,000 was paid for the number plate ‘K1 NGS.’ This was paid by an anonymous buyer.
For a typical Car Registration the prices are not so high. They usually start from around £200. A fee of £80 must be paid to the Department of Transport on all such transfers from vehicle to vehicle.
Personal number plates are now very popular, both for people looking for a quirky / cool accessory to their car or even as an investment.
