New and Used Chrysler Information:
Beginning in 1985, when Tom Gale became Vice President of Design, Chrysler began a process that eventually resulted in the company once again becoming the dominant force in American automobile design.
Along with John Herlitz and Trevor Creed, both of whom worked with Gale and who later succeeded him as leaders of the product design team at Chrysler, Tom Gale developed the 1988 Portofino concept car, and sold it to management as the blueprint for the future. It was all that and more, with its "cab forward" design contributing directly to the development of the Chrysler Concorde and the other LH cars that continue to set the standard for automotive styling.
Elwood Engel was Chrysler's design chief from 1961 until 1974, encompassing the socially and politically turbulent era of the mid-60s to the early 70s. Engel joined Chrysler after a successful tour of duty at Ford, where he was responsible for the 1961 Lincoln. Replacing Virgil Exner (whose health had been failing) wasn't easy, but he made his mark quickly in two major areas.
First, he presided over the end of the tailfinned, "Forward Look" era, which officially came to a close in 1962 when all new Chryslers were redesigned so that no fins were used.
Second, he was responsible for the Chrysler turbine cars, of which 50 were manufactured and road tested in 1963.
